What better choice for a classical Italian trip than Goethe’s Iphigenia, torn between truth and compassion?

For Anselm Feuerbach (1829-1880), Goethe’s Iphigenia embodied the female ideal of classicism. The model for the gouache in Room 102 was Feuerbach’s muse Nanna, whose real name was Anna Risi. Feuerbach was one of art history’s three great ‘German Romans’, together with Hans von Marées and Arnold Böcklin. He studied at the Dusseldorf Academy, then later in Munich and Antwerp, and in Paris under Thomas Couture.
