A portrait painter and incessant traveller

In Room 101, ‘Loving Couple’ by Johann Baptist Lampi – a washed pen and ink drawing from 1802 ¬– provides a counterpoint to the Orpheus motif of Giovanni Frangi. Lampi was born in Nonsberg (Trentino). He became an Academy professor in Vienna in 1786, and travelled widely to the courts of Vienna, Warsaw and St. Petersburg as a portrait artist. His work stands on the threshold between Baroque and Classicism.
